End of Year Newsletter

Letter from the Headmaster

It’s hard to believe it, but we’re already in the home stretch of our school year. This school year is quickly approaching its end, and our final few weeks will fly by with its busy schedule of honors programs, end-of-year celebrations, and graduation. All scheduled events are on the BA website calendar. Be sure to check it often! We look forward to seeing everyone at these special events.

As we begin to close out one year, we start to look toward next year with our rising 6th and 9th grade orientations that will be held on May 4. Look for more information in your email! The rising Pre-K orientation will be on May 11. In our meetings, we will share information tips to prepare all these groups for the next level!

The Class of 2023 will be the largest graduating class in the history of BA with 53 students. We hope that you can join us at one of the many celebration opportunities – Senior Send Off, Baccalaureate, Alumni Breakfast, and graduation. We are proud of our seniors!

Our construction and renovation project is underway and making good progress! Students and staff have made a few adjustments to their routine and the flow of foot traffic after returning from Spring Break. It is an exciting time to be at BA and watch the daily changes to the building. We will be sending out information before each event if we need to adjust access to events in May. Please be sure to read emails and pay close attention to signage.

I want to thank you for choosing Bulloch Academy to educate your students, and we wish a restful, rejuvenating summer full of family, friends, and fun!

Pre-K Press

Kim Burnette, Lower School Director

Our four year olds have been “Hopping Into Spring!” They have so many great activities going on each week, and they are soaking up lots of learning!

They celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with lots of green and looked for some sneaky leprechauns. Spring is a fun time with baby chicks hatching and watching tadpoles change to frogs. Each class loved having an Easter party and looking for eggs.

They continue learning each day in large group, small groups, center time, and at recess. It has been an amazing year of fun, friendships, growth and learning. They are heading to kindergarten soon!

Lower School

Fifth graders at BA have been hard at work this spring to publish their very own book entitled “This Is Us.” The book contains a biography poem and a full-color self-portrait of each student. During the month of February, the students learned how to write biography poems, and Mrs. North helped students with their illustrations during art class. The finishing touches were added during the month of March, and then the book was sent off to Studentreasures for publishing. We are so proud of these fifth-graders for becoming published authors!

Nurse’s Notes

Wow! Another successful school year is almost in the books! My family and I are looking forward to summer, just as many of you and your children are.

Our spring health lessons focused on wellness. In our 3^rd-5^th grades, we talked about taking care of ourselves, physically and mentally, especially during standardized testing time. In our K-2^nd grade lessons, we talked about screen time. The students were given a Summer Break Screen Time Checklist with suggestions to get them off their screens and into other activities this summer. I hope parents and other caregivers will use them with our students this summer to keep them active. There are also some really great camps being offered this summer here at Bulloch Academy!

If you have a rising junior or rising seventh grader, please make sure to check on immunizations as you have health physicals or general physicals completed. Immunizations must be up to date to attend Bulloch Academy. As we leave for summer, here are some reminders about sun safety. Protect your skin from UV rays from the sun and from artificial sources like tanning beds and sunlamps. Always report skin changes to your doctor. While enjoying the benefits of the outdoors, people can use sun protection in several forms: staying in the shade, wearing protective clothing, and applying and reapplying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher.

So as you take off to the beaches, to outdoor sports practices, VBS, and any other time that you plan to be in the sun, take care of your skin and teach your student to take care of his/her skin. Have a safe and wonderful summer break full of sun, fun, and sun sunscreen!

From the Counselor’s Couch

Ashley Hand, Lower School Counselor

Summer is almost here!! I know some teachers even have a countdown going on in their class, and almost every student that I ask knows how many days are left until we get out for break! 😀 I love hearing what all you have planned for the kids this summer, I’ve heard cruises, going to the beach, summer camps, and so much more!

We still have a lot more left at school to be excited for!! We have field trips and honors day left to enjoy!! Whooo hoooo!

All of your children have worked so hard this year and are learning so much! I worked with 3rd-5th graders on some CTP-5 testing strategies, some of which included some relaxation techniques……they even let me do some meditation with them! In K-2nd grade, we finished up our Energy Bus Rule of “Enjoy the Ride”. They shared with me all the exciting things they enjoy doing in their spare time that help them enjoy this ride through life.

As we wrap up this year, it has been a privilege to work with each one of your littles! I hope you all have a great summer!!!

Athletics

Spring has sprung!

At Bulloch Academy, spring sports is like a freight train that comes in fast and furious and sometimes it seems like rainouts and rescheduling and transportation and recruiting officials and hosting events on campus just might DO US IN. But just when you are ready to throw up your hands, we watch individuals and teams conquer the obstacles and embrace the struggles and compete with their whole heart and we remember our WHY.

What have we witnessed this spring:

Our boy’s golf team won their first region title in 19 years.
Our varsity baseball team is 19-4 and has claimed their first region title since 1991 and as it now stands they will host in the first round of state.
Our boys and girls tennis teams qualified for state and the boys are region champs for the first time in 17 years. Our girls were runner-up.
Our girl’s track team is region champs again and the boys are runner-up.
Our boy’s soccer team is set to host a first-round match in state soccer, and if girls move up one spot in the rankings they will also host.

Our middle school programs are also making incredible strides and should impact our varsity programs in a meaningful way when those athletes matriculate to high school.

This spring has left us with many special memories and a solid foundation for growth. Our student-athletes have exhibited confidence, character, poise, and humility and they have fought with determination, teamwork, and mental toughness. It is a great thing to experience and enjoy and we are not done yet!

Join us in celebrating our Varsity athletes on May 16th from 6pm-8pm at First Baptist Church- Fellowship Hall! We will be recognizing the wrestling, archery, tennis, baseball, soccer, basketball, track, and golf teams. Each athlete may bring up to two guests. Dinner will be provided for athletes and coaches, additional tickets will need to be purchased for parents in attendance. If you are an athlete who will be coming alone, we still need you to fill out this form.

Curriculum Corner

It is hard to believe that the 2022-2023 school year is coming to an end! There are many exciting events to look forward to over the next few weeks, including Honor’s Programs, end-of-year parties, and other exciting events. Summer is a great time for learning opportunities for students of all ages. As a reminder, rising 2nd-8th grade students have a summer math assignment, rising 5th-12th grade students have a summer reading assignment, and all AP students will have a summer assignment as well. These assignments will be posted on the Bulloch Academy website towards the end of May and are due on the first day of school unless stated otherwise in their packet of materials.

We are so excited about starting the 2023-2024 in a fully-renovated middle school & high school building! With the upcoming construction plans, please remember that all high school students will be virtual during the week of May 15-19, with projects in lieu of their final exams due the week of May 22-24. Teachers will communicate their exact plans and expectations prior to students leaving school for their virtual work.

Middle school students have the option of attending school May 15-24 in person or virtual, but parents may only choose one option and not a combination. In-person learning for May 15-24 will be in an alternate location on campus, and students must attend in person each day. Virtual students must log in each day May 15-24 to receive credit for attending class. Teachers will give specific instructions for how students are to login each day. Virtual students MUST check their Bulloch Academy email on a daily basis. If you have not already done so, please make your choice by the end of the day today (April 28th) by clicking on the link here.

Please check your email the week before your child’s camps for check-in information, how to access the camp location, etc as there will be changes that may occur with construction!

Facilities

Big things are happening at Bulloch Academy! Our upper school renovation is in full swing with the new outside walls going up. Pope Construction has been on campus since Friday, March 31st and are working continuously. Our teachers and students are working hard on packing and moving all items into the Howard Arena every spare minute they have while also studying for year-end tests. On May 13th, the interior walls will be coming down and all High School students will be virtual learning. We have relocated Middle School classrooms throughout the campus for in-person learning. Our upper school will have a nice clean updated look when we return to school in August. With construction this summer the main front doors of the Cornerstone building will be the only entrance to the school. We will continue with summer elementary camps and upper school summer practice and workouts. Please be aware that construction can cause last-minute changes to how you enter and exit the buildings to get to your events. Please check emails daily for any updates. Thank you all for being flexible and patient while we strive to improve our academic facilities.
